Ready or not, fall is coming. To help you transition, Ben and Jake are naming the top 3 things homeowners in Jackson, Michigan should do before September 15. Check back here September 29 for Part II of this conversation to learn what 3 things to do after September 15. We've got you covered.
Fall home maintenance is a series of small, pro-active steps you take to keep things running smoothly. Neglecting these measures could mean expensive repair bills and a lower list price when it comes time to sell.
Change furnace and humidifier filters
Furnace filters should be changed no less than once per year. Now is a great time to do this because soon your furnace will be working continually to keep you warm. If you have a whole-house humidifier, that filter can be changed at the same time. If you want help and don't know who to call, we can suggest one of our preferred professionals.
Empty Your Septic Tank
If your house is hooked up to municipal sewer service, skip this one. If you have a septic system, the tank should be emptied every 3-5 years depending on the number of people living in the house, the size of your tank, and your water usage. Fall is a great time to pump your tank.
Plant Grass Seed
The best time to plant grass seed in mid-Michigan is between August 15 and September 15. This includes over seeding patches of your lawn with bare soil. Check the weather forecast, and avoid spreading if lots of daily rain is predicted, because too much rain can drown the seed. In dryer periods, be sure to water your new seed daily so it germinates.
